I got residence through settlement and want to renew it without losing the right to work

Settlement (arraigo) is not renewed as such: at the end of the year you move to an ordinary residence and work permit or request a one-year extension.

Routes to consider

The ordinary permit requires a contract or self-employment. If you do not yet meet its requirements, you can request one-year extensions by proving an active job search and registration with the public employment service, except in cases of illness, disability or retirement age. For training-based settlement the extension depends on passing the course, and family settlement, which lasts five years, follows other rules. It is best to file before the expiry date. A point to check carefully

Find the decision granting your permit, not only the card or NIE number. Check which activity it authorises and when it takes effect.

Documents to get started

  • Full passport and current authorisation, if any.
  • Earlier decisions and proof of applications or renewals.
  • Employment history, funds, insurance and absences, depending on the route.
  • Timeline of entries, departures, applications and notifications.

How we proceed

  • Assessment: confirm the route and competent authority.
  • Preparation: collect and review evidence specific to your case.
  • Filing: check forms, fees and representation.
  • Follow-up: monitor notices and explain the decision and next formalities.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start?

Before your current permit or stay expires: there is no fixed filing window for a change of status. Do not start the new activity until it is granted.
